Design Fiction : Baby Boomers Returning to University

Current Environment:
Numerous online learning platforms have proven to be difficult to navigate for any student. With many options and sub categories to follow it is easy to lose the end user goal. There is a discourse between note taking in class and utilizing the online platform for courses be it submissions or content.

We need to design a solution that not only streamlines the learning platform experience but can also be tailored to those returning to post secondary education (i.e Baby Boomers).
Proposed Solution:

Quill proposes a two part solution - the first reflecting on the analog side being the Quill Pen which tracks note taking within classes and the second element is the Quill Dashboard which synthesizes the data from the Quill Pen by storing it on the Dashboard. The Dashboard streamlines common user flows in order to optimize the user experience while on the platform while providing analytical tracking for learning progress.
InVision to Prototype:

The Quill Dashboard highlights key areas such courses, due dates, assignments and progress within each course. The analytics provide transparency in learning and allow self reflection to better understand learning behaviours and act upon patterns found. The data gained from the smart pen (Quill) device is stored in conjunction to course materials found on the Dashboard.
User Testing: Focus groups were established to test user flows and use of graphics. Key discoveries included. Stage one user testing focused on categories and themes, stage two focused on user flow and text based understandings.

1. Text based platform
avoidance of icons due to subjective understandings
2. Emphasis on sensory learning
notes linking to audio lectures to accomodate various types of learners
3. Analytics to show pain points and potential improvements
Similar to FitBit analytics, the analytic space allows for a more reflective approach when learning which allows the user to understand their learning patterns and how to better set up for success.
